Alberta to Rewrite Oil Sands Tailings Ponds Regulations - The Globe and Mail
Description

An examination of the current standards for oil sands tailings ponds regulations that are to be rewritten because existing rules are not being met. Directive 74 is the name of the current standard and it was originally introduced in 2009 after an incident involving the death of a large flock of migratory birds landing in one tailings pond. Because companies were not complying with the directives deadlines, and also not being penalized for it, the Alberta Energy Regulator will try to align government goals with the intended outcome for Direcvite 74 for the new tailings management framework.
