Ottawa demands NAFTA body drop probe into oilsands pollution- Bell Media
Description

Ottawa has met NAFTA’s Commission for Environment Co-operation’s probe into environmental allegations in Alberta’s oil sands with disapproval. According to CEC, the Canadian government has “failed to enforce provisions in the Fisheries Act by allowing harmful substances to leak from tailings ponds into water sources downstream of mines in northeastern Alberta.” Environment Canada argues that there is no need for the probe as there is currently a legal case involving the same issue. The case is currently being reviewed by a provincial court.
