In a conference in Fort McMurray, Alberta, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu described the oil sands in the region as “filth.” The Nobel laureate, has spoken out against the oil industry in Canada in the past, citing the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Tutu has also championed the rights of First Nations communities that are being negatively impacted by the industry. Furthermore, he is against the development of the Keystone XL pipeline due to possible environmental risks associated with its construction.
